Genetic predisposition to specific conditions
Known, well-studied variants linked to conditions such as familial hypercholesterolaemia, some heart-muscle conditions, and some cancers that run in families. This is the category with the most practical value, because its presence changes the follow-up plan immediately: earlier screening, at closer intervals, and sometimes preventive medication at the doctor's decision.
Silent carrier status
A completely healthy person may carry a copy of a gene linked to a recessive condition without ever showing a sign of it. It becomes meaningful when having children: if both partners carry the same copy, the chance of passing it on rises.
How the body responds to medicines
Certain genes determine how quickly your body breaks a given medicine down. The practical result: a medicine given at a standard dose that does not work, or works too strongly and produces side effects. Well-known examples include some blood thinners, some cholesterol medicines, and some mental-health medicines.
Polygenic risk scores and lifestyle indicators
Probabilistic estimates built by combining a large number of small variants (a higher tendency toward insulin resistance, for instance), alongside lighter indicators such as caffeine or lactose metabolism.
